Night Nursing: The Ocean, My Baby, and Me

little fingers spread wide, reaching out clumsily
a net cast into a vast dark ocean
mouth open, my baby searches

dreamily, I pull her close
and my little fisherman makes a catch

ever so gently she suckles
until waves wash over me and milk begins to flow

she rides the waves of nourishment
bracing her outstretched legs against mine
to keep from being swept away

she grasps my hand in hers
holding on with rhythmic ebb and flow
mmmm mm mmm she coos

until the waves subside and we float aimlessly
drifting back to sleep
together
